Message from the 2025 Chairman

Bill Slater Sheep

Bill Slater (Chairman) helping to show his wife, Sally’s, Badger Face Welsh Mountain Torddu breed (at Ashby Show).

On behalf of Brailsford & District Ploughing & Hedgecutting Society, I would like to welcome you all to the 119th Annual Match. Come and spend the day with us—meet up with old friends, and perhaps even make some new ones.

In agricultural life, we face many challenges, and this year has been no different. But farmers carry on, supporting one another and coming together at events like this.

I am often asked, “Can anyone attend, or is it just for farmers?”
The answer is yes—everyone is welcome. The Society encourages all visitors to come and enjoy the skill and craftsmanship displayed by farmers and their families in everyday life.

Another question I hear is, “Isn’t it just a handful of tractors in a field?”
If only it were that simple! On Match Day, you will see the talent of ploughmen and women working with horses, vintage, and modern ploughs. You will also witness the craftsmanship of skilled hedge-layers at work. Our adult competitions further showcase talents in baking, horticulture, and handicrafts.

Thanks to the support of our local producers and agricultural businesses, you can also browse a wide variety of trade stands—from local cheese makers to machinery dealers.

So why not join me and the team for a wonderful day out?

Sincerely, Bill Slater, Chairman
