Growing Maize Judging

Out again this time with the Maize judging, Phil Smith Judge, Graham Knight Assistant, and Mick Bailey Steward. A bit of an easier day this time with ten entries to get around, but over a wide part of the area clocking up another hundred miles.

Some of the entries this time were new, not only to the competition but to growing maize. So it was a good opportunity for them to draw on the knowledge of the judges as to what they needed to look for.

Armed with a long checklist of what they are looking for, it leaves no stone unturned in the search for the best crop. Even to the extent of taking maize cobs home for weighing under laboratory conditions or in the kitchen, some confusion over that.

It was said that even with the effects of the hot, dry weather, all of the crops were of a good standard and very even overall.

Oh yes, and there was also a pub lunch this time courtesy of The Hanging Gate at Shottle, who offered a warm welcome and pleasant surroundings to our team.

A big thanks to them and our judges for being part of making these competitions the growing success they are.
